Visking Membranes Cleaning Methods VISKING DIALYSIS MEMBRANES Some cleaning of the membrane is necessary in all cases because the glycerine must be removed before the membranes function properly.
CLEANING METHOD 1 The glycerine can be removed by washing the tubing in running water for 3 - 4hours. Removal of sulphur compounds may be accomplished by treating the tubing with sodium sulphide solution (0.3%) at 80ºC for 1 minute, wash with hot water(60ºC) for 2 minutes, followed by acidification with sulphuric acid (0.2%), and washing with hot water to remove the acid.
CLEANING METHOD 2 Heat the membrane in a large volume of 2% sodium bicarbonate and 1 millimolar EDTA at 80ºC for 30 minutes. Rinse the tubing thoroughly in pyrogen-freedistilled water.
CLEANING METHOD 3 MEDICELL Membranes Ltd can supply the Spectrum® Heavy Metal Cleaning Solution (132908). Detailed instructions on the use of these solutions is supplied with the kits. Please contact Medicell directly for details.
